The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday said it has yet to confirm the reportedย death of a Filipino sailorย following last week’s attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on a bulk cargo carrier in the Red Sea.

DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said they cannot confirm the death yet until they see the body of the Filipino sailor. He expressed hope that the sailor, which is still missing, is still alive.

21 of the 22 Filipino crewmenย of a ship that was attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea were brought to safety. They arrived in the Philippines on Monday.

The Philippines, through the DFA,ย condemned the attackย and called on members of the United Nations “to protect the human rights of seafarers.”
